WHAT TO WEAR IN ANTARCTICA
Your decision to travel to Antarctica is an exciting one and knowing what to wear can be a little daunting. Outlander Expeditions and MUSTO has prepared a recommended clothing list to ensure that you get the most out of your expedition while travelling in style and comfort.
The 3-layer system - with so many clothing options available today, let’s break this down to 3 simple garments.
Base Layer: This is the layer that has the most skin contact. It is the first process layer that is responsible for insulating you from the elements by wicking away sweat and perspiration, ensuring that you are warm dry and comfortable. An example of a base layer are thermals (aka long johns) which are availabe in merino wool or synthetic fabrics.
Mid Layer: This layer is responsible for providing an secondary insulating layer and it is the mid layer’s job to take dampness from the base layer and convert it to steam. Warm air is trapped within this layer and any steam is passed through the layer to ensure your body is kept dry while active. A common mid layer example is a polar fleece or microfibre jacket.
Outer Layer: Also know as the outer shell, this layer is responsible for expelling the damp steam through a skin-like membrane to ensure you are dry on the inside as well as the outside. The Outer Layer has a waterproof treatment to prevent the outside elements entering your clothing. An example of an outer layer is MUSTO’s BR & Gortex series jackets and pants.
Other important clothes and accessories:
Gloves - Each glove will have a cold climate rating. When choosing gloves, look for ones that have thermal lining, breathability and waterproofing. Mid and Outer layers are often combined in glove designs to ensure an integrated system that provides warmth and dryness from the elements. Depending on the rating of the gloves, you might consider a base layer lining for extra warmth. Other things to consider are practical use features such as foldable finger and thumb access (mostly for phone and camera use)
Eyewear - Antarctica can be a land of rapidly changing weather events and it is advisable to consider eyewear for all conditions. Sunglasses are advisable as a bear minimum to prevent snowblindness on bright sunny days. They also offer basic protection from sleet and snow. Before choosing polarised sunglasses, consider that these lenses eliminate sheen and glare which often indicates slippery surfaces. Ski googles are worth packing in the event of a blizzard or high winds. Most manufacturers offer an OTG (over-the-glasses) version to allow for corrective specs to be worn underneath.
Headwear - a warm hat such as a beanie is a must. One of the best methods to thermal regulate is to remove or add a warm hat. On sunny days, a peaked hat is advised to ensure extra protection from the sun. MUSTO offer thermal headwear with sun peaks which are perfect for Antarctic conditions.
Luggage and protective bags - light-weight dry bags and phone pouches are excellent choices for carrying precious items such as cameras and smartphones to zodiacs and to shore landings. They not only protect our valuables from the conditions, they also allow you to conveniently store items and then clean the bag with dissinfectant on our return back to the ship. Biosecurity is paramount in Antarctica.
Footwear - boots are provided to you for the duration of the expedition however you might consider a light-weigh waterproof shoe for life on board the vessel. Loafers and deck shoes are idea to ensure anti-slip protection and overall comfort
